September 25, 2024
Martina O’Sullivan, Executive Publisher at August Books has acquired UK & Commonwealth rights to WHEN WOMEN RAN FIFTH AVENUE: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion by Julie Satow from Rachel Clements at Abner Stein on behalf of Susan Canavan at Waxman Literary Agency. The book was published by Doubleday US in June to rave reviews and hit the New York Times Bestseller list. August Books will publish the book in hardback on 7th November.
WHEN WOMEN RAN FIFTH AVENUE is a history of the twentieth century luxury department store told through the story of three trailblazers. In the 1930s, Hortense Odlum came to her husband’s department store as a housewife tasked with attracting more shoppers like herself, and wound up running the company. Dorothy Shaver championed American designers during World War II and became the first businesswoman to earn a $1 million salary. And in the 1960s Geraldine Stutz re-invented the look of the modern department store and inspired a devoted following of ultra-chic shoppers. Rich with personal drama and trade secrets, the book captures a lost world glitz, decadence and fun, and showcases the women who made that beautifully curated world go round.
Julie Satow is an award-winning journalist and the author of The Plaza. She is a regular contributor to the New York Times.
Satow said: ‘I am so grateful to Martina O’Sullivan and the team at August Books for bringing When Women Ran Fifth Avenue to a new audience. I hope that these stories will entertain, bring joy, and evoke memories of a bygone era, and that the lives of Hortense, Dorothy, and Geraldine will resonate with readers.’
O’Sullivan said ‘I adore this book and I’m so proud to publish it in August’s launch year. It’s a rare history that reads like a novel telling the story of three strikingly different women who were icons of power at a time when most women had none. With a whirlwind of famous characters including Amelia Earhart, Salvador Dali, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Princess Grace, Lauren Bacall, Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis, Joan Collins and Andy Warhol, the book totally immerses the reader in the most glamorous days of fashion and retail history.’
